Europakonzert 2006 [Blu-ray]



A fine concert where the improvement of clarity achieved by the Blu-ray is especially apparent
This Europe Concert from 2006 given by Barenboim and the Berlin Philharmonic is relatively unusual within the series because it is devoted exclusively to one composer and also because it does not present the BPO at its full complement.

The city of Prague was chosen for this concert to mark the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth. Mozart had been closely identified, not only with Prague, but also with the Estates Theatre where this concert was held and which had previously seen acclaimed performances of Figaro, La Clemenza di Tito and the first performance of Don Giovanni during Mozart's life.

Barenboim, regardless of the reduced size of the orchestra, still delivers interpretations which can still be described as `fairly large scale' Mozart in concept and is thus some distance from the the 'authentic instruments' concept of the Mozartian sound world.
