"This was a man with a capital 'M'"
By accident I came across this film, which bills itself as "the true story behind Bloodsport" but is actually a documentary on the life and controversies of martial artist Frank Dux. For those of you who don't know, Dux supplied the story for the titular film, claiming it to be based on his own experiences of fighting in a secret international martial arts tournament. This is one of many larger-than-life claims Dux has made, leading him to contemporarily be labeled as a walking joke. This 68-minute documentary takes a look at the issue subjectively, telling stories mainly from Dux's point of view and therein becoming one of the few pro-Dux conceptions of the past two decades. Will it potentially alienate folks who have a set opinion on the man? - probably, but despite this and a few rough production aspects, it's still a very entertaining movie.
Much of the film acts as a timeline of Dux's life,...
A revealing look at Frank Dux, the inspiration for "Bloodsport."
If you're a fan of "Bloodsport" or Jean-Claude Van Damme in general, you might find this documentary as interesting as I did. This is the story of Frank Dux, told in documentary form through a series of interviews with Dux himself, vintage news clips showcasing his pre-"Bloodsport" fame and chronicling his diverse career/life. Some say Dux was truly a James Bond-type, but a closer fit might be towards the life of Bond's creator, Ian Fleming.
Here you'll learn about Dux's military background, martial arts achievements, "special assignments" and much more. In addition, Dux's relationship with Jean-Claude Van Damme is examined from the early days of "Bloodsport"'s production, through their professional falling out over "The Quest."
While it's not a perfect portrait of the man, the stories told here serve to flesh out Dux's legendary mystique, providing great insight on the films in question and, like any good documentary, the overall result is fairly objective...
Not what you think!
I received this DVD for my birthday. My son thought it was the movie Bloodsport staring JCVD, it's not; it's the life story of Frank Dux, the actual person that JVCD portrayed. It's kind of a let down when you expect to see the full length movie! Non the less I watched the entire DVD, learned a few things about Frank Dux, and added it to my DVD collection!
